Northland-based Calitec powers NZ’s electrification with heat pump water heating

Updated: Aug 4

Whangarei - Calitec Hot Water Systems, an innovative Northland-based company, is making waves across Aotearoa with its high-performance, energy-efficient heat pump hot water systems for residential use.

The company supports local sustainable initiatives. Such as the upcoming community event Electrify Te Tai Tokerau on 13 August in Whangārei: to educate Kiwi families on how to lower their energy bills while making sustainable choices, and agrees that New Zealand’s full electrification goal is both realistic and achievable.

“Everyone’s talking about solar and electric vehicles, and they’re great for energy saving,” says Peter Ras, manager of Calitec. “But many Kiwis don’t realise that water heating is one of the biggest energy users in their family home. Replacing an old electric or gas cylinder with a heat pump water heater can reduce water heating energy costs by up to 75%. It’s a perfect solution, especially for larger households. Even if your existing system still works well, it’s good to start your research beforehand, so when it is time for replacement, e.g. with a failing system, you’ll know the benefits of efficiency and can make smart, future-proof decisions.”

The New Zealand Government is working toward a renewable energy future and is strongly encouraging electrification and energy efficiency. Fossil fuels and natural gas are being phased out. With firm policies and incentives expected, heat pump water heating is rapidly climbing to the top of the national energy agenda.

As part of this, Calitec has been selected as a supplier for EECA’s (Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority) Heat Pump Water Heater Product Demonstration, a government-backed initiative monitoring systems nationwide. This unique opportunity puts Calitec’s locally designed split system to the test in real Kiwi homes, across different climates and household types. Results are expected in 2026.

Calitec has become a recognised name in the industry. Established seven years ago and supported by a growing nationwide network of independent installers, Calitec provides its own premium stainless steel split systems, designed specifically for New Zealand’s unique conditions. Unlike off-the-shelf imports, these systems are purpose-built for local climates and Kiwi homes, making them a smart long-term investment for homeowners.

The future is electric

Calitec supports the upcoming Electrify Te Tai Tokerau event: The Future is Electric. This free community event will feature Mike Casey, the founder of New Zealand’s first fully electric, zero-emissions orchard, who will speak about our electric future and his own journey, and will inspire others to take action.

Calitec will be on-site with an information table and welcomes the community to stop by, ask questions, and learn how switching to heat pump water heating can benefit both household budgets and the environment.
