Our Calitec systems typically boast a Coefficient of Performance (COP) ranging between 4 and 5. When comparing with other heat pump hot water systems on the market, it's crucial to consider similar specifications, outdoor ambient temperatures, and energy input and output. This provides a realistic picture of performance and enables a meaningful comparison. More info in this blog article about comparing important specifications, including COP.
Calitec offers two types of heat pump hot water (split) systems: refrigerant cycle (KP-50) and water cycle (WH-70). The key differences lie in their setup, installation requirements, and operational characteristics. Read this technical blog article for more detail and the pros & cons of both systems.
That’s the most frequently asked question, and there is no clear answer. Every household’s hot water usage is different and, like with all energy-efficient appliances, ‘the more you use, the more you save’.
A realistic rule of thumb would be an average yearly saving of 65-70% in power usage for heating your water, which would amount to around 20% off your total electricity bill (65% savings off the 30% hot water part of your electricity bill = 20%).
All heat pumps get heat from the ambient air. So, the warmer the air, the easier it is for the heat pump to absorb that heat. Conversely, the colder the air, the harder the heat pump must work to absorb the heat. That’s why the efficiency, or COP, of heat pumps must be assessed against the ambient temperature.

A split system has two parts: an outdoor heat pump unit and a separate hot water cylinder, which can be installed either inside (like in a garage or laundry) or outside. The two are connected with pipework that transfers heat to the cylinder (by water of refrigerant cycling).
This setup gives more flexibility for New Zealand homes, as the cylinder can be placed closer to where hot water is used. In some cases, the outdoor unit can even be connected to an existing hot water cylinder, making it a smart option for both new homes and retrofits.
Installation costs can vary widely depending on the model of heat pump water heater, your location, and the specifics of your existing setup. Factors such as electrical upgrades, relocating the system, or replacing old pipework can also influence the final price.
As a general guide:
Standard cylinder replacement installs typically start around $1,500 – $2,000, carried out by a plumber with minimal assistance from an electrician.
For the KP-50 system, you will also need a heat pump installer to connect the refrigerant pipework. This usually ranges between $750 and $1,250, depending on the installation.

The stainless steel cylinder of our Calitec heat pump hot water system can be placed inside and outside. An outside placement can be beneficial if space is limited in your home. It's not uncommon for hot water cylinders to be installed outside. Just make sure that the water pipes are well insulated.
Calitec Hot Water Systems will operate very efficiently in all New Zealand's climates. The systems are designed to operate between -10 degrees Celsius and 45 degrees Celsius ambient temperature. As with all heat pumps, the efficiency varies with the ambient temperature.
The air temperature doesn’t differ much between the front or the back of your house; while the sun may make it feel warmer, the temperature is practically the same. Therefore, a south-side spot or a location hidden under your house or deck doesn’t affect the efficiency that much.
The outdoor unit has a life expectancy of 10 to 15 years. At its end of life you only have to replace the outdoor unit and not the whole system. During heat pump repairs you can also rely on the electric back-up heater, so you never run out of hot water. Until its end of life, we can do repairs through our New Zealand service network.
For orders of over 10 units/systems, we can customise a system to suit your needs, such as the heating capacity of the heat pump or the cylinder size. Contact us to see how we can assist you.
For many years, we have taken pride in being a member of the New Zealand Green Building Council (NZGBC). The NZGBC represents a collective of over 700 organizations and companies who share the belief that New Zealand requires quality, sustainable buildings. We firmly believe that better buildings lead to healthier and happier Kiwis.
The NZGBC operates the independent Homestar rating tool for new builds. Constructing a Homestar-rated home not only contributes to a healthier living environment but also ensures a home that is warmer, drier, and more environmentally friendly than a similar home built to the minimum standards of the New Zealand Building Code. Please note, Calitec heat pump hot water systems provide Homestar credits due to their energy efficiency, low running costs, and contribution to reducing our carbon footprint.
Yes, green bank loans and mortgage top-ups in New Zealand can help fund energy-efficient upgrades like heat pump water heaters. These loans often come with low or even 0% interest rates, making it easier to manage the upfront costs while reducing your long-term energy bills. Check with your bank for specific loan options, including Kiwibank, ANZ, ASB, and Westpac.
